“HOW CAN WE REALLY BE HAPPY?”

MATTHEW 5:1-12


Matthew 5:1-12 


I John 2:15 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”


What is the basic command of this passage?


What does this command suggest about being blessed in this world?


Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” 


  1.   The Principles For Joy And Happiness As Believers.


  • “Happy are poor in spirit” Matthew 5:3- the humble.


James 4:6-8


  • “Happy are those who mourn” Matthew 5:4- the hurting.


2 Corinthians 12:9-10


  • “Happy are the meek” Matthew 5:5- the harnessed.


Ephesians 5:18 “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.”


  • “Happy are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness” Matthew 5:6- the hungry.

Psalm 34:8 “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!”


  • “Happy are the merciful” Matthew 5:7- the helpers.


Philippians 2:3-4


  • “Happy are the pure in heart” Matthew 5:8- the holy.


Romans 8:6 “For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded minded is life and peace.”


  • “Happy are the peacemakers” Matthew 5:9- the healers.


  • “Happy are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake” Matthew 5:10-12- the harassed.


2.   The Practice of Joy And Happiness As Believers.


*Understand the Aggressive Pull of the World on Your Life.


Psalm 1:1 “Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful.”


  • The Progression of the World


  • The Pull of the World


  • The Permanence of the World


*We Must Undertake an Aggressive Program In God’s Word


Psalm 1:2-3 “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.”


Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”


1 John 5:19 “We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.”


In other words, there is no contentment for believers to be found in a world where Satan’s values prevail.


1 John 3:8 “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”


We as believers will one day be totally holy


2 Peter 3:10 “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.”
