Four Key Personages

1. The Sun-Clothed Woman 

Revelation 12:1-2

The woman is referred to as “ a great sign appeared in heaven” vs. 1

Romans 1:3, 9:4-5 

Genesis 37:9-10

2.   The Devil

Revelation 12:3-4

Names used for the Devil:

vs.3 “a great, fiery red dragon”

vs.9 “that serpent of old”- this refers to the first time the devil is seen in the Bible, in the garden of Eden.

vs.9 “the Devil”- this is the name used in the gospels for the enemy of God. It means slanderer or accuser.

vs.9 “Satan”- this name means adversary. The devil is the adversary of all God’s children.

vs.10 “the accuser of our brethren”- this indicates his work before the throne of God today, seeking to discredit the saints before God.

The seven-crowned head probably refers to the seven stages of the Roman empire, the embodiment of evil government.

The ten horns refers to the ten kings who will be dominate during the Tribulation. 

vs. 4- tells us regarding that great dragon that “his tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth.”

3.   The Man Child 

Revelation 12:4-6

This is Christ- “He will rule all nations with a rod of iron”, “and her Child was caught up to God and His throne.” vs. 5

vs.6- refers to the Tribulation period when it says “the woman fled into the wilderness” where God had prepared a place for her.

4.   The Archangel Michael

Revelation 12:7

Michael is the commanding general of the heavenly host. He has had previous confrontation with Satan. 

Jude 9, Daniel 10:13, 12:1

The War In Heaven

Revelation 12:7-12

The war in heaven could be a series of battles that culminate in the middle of the Tribulation period with the expulsion of Satan from the court of God. Satan will be banished to earth and confined there. This is why their is great rejoicing in heaven: vs.10-12.

Satan’s Short Time- Rev. 12:12-17

vs.14 “two wings as a great eagle”

vs. 15 “So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood”

What is the meaning of this:

1. Satan may be able the divert actual rivers and bodies of water into the desert, where Israel is being kept by God, and will try to drown her.
2. He will attempt to flood her with false teaching.
3. Since this passage has already referred to symbols of “the woman” and the “enormous dragon” the word “flood” may be a symbol of a great army that he sends after them.

vs. 16 “But the earth helped the woman”- God protected Israel in a supernatural way.

The dragon is enraged- vs.17
