“THE LIFE OF MOSES”
“MOSES’ BIRTH”
EXODUS 2:1-10
1. The Home Life of Moses
Exodus 2:1-2 “And a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. 2So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months.”
His father’s name was Amram and his mother was Jochebed, Amram’s aunt.
Exodus 6:20 “Now Amram took for himself Jochebed, his father’s sister, as wife; and she bore him Aaron and Moses. And the years of the life of Amram were one hundred and thirty-seven.”
Exodus 15:20 “Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.”
Exodus 6:20 “Now Amram took for himself Jochebed, his father’s sister, as wife; and she bore him Aaron and Moses. And the years of the life of Amram were one hundred and thirty-seven.”
Exodus 7:7 “And Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh.”
After the birth of Moses, his mother “saw that he was a beautiful child.”
Acts 7:20 “At this time Moses was born, and was well pleasing to God; and he was brought up in his father’s house for three months.”
Exodus 1:22 “So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”
Hebrews 11:23 “By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command.”
2. Protection of Moses
Exodus 2:3 “But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.”
Exodus 2:4 “And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him.”
When Pharaoh’s daughter “came down to bathe at the river. And her maidens walked along the riverside; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it.” Exodus 2:5
Exodus 2:6 “And when she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby wept. So she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
Exodus 2:7 “Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”
The Egyptian woman gave her permission.
Exodus 2:8 “And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the maiden went and called the child’s mother.”
Exodus 2:9 “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.”
Application:
The Biblical principle is “Get Going With God.” Our faith should be active, not passive. It should incorporate foresight and wisdom in its application, not simply hindsight and wishful thinking.
3. Moses’ Childhood
The text goes on to tell us that Jochebed took baby Moses from Pharaoh’s daughter and nursed him.
Exodus 2:9 “So the woman took the child and nursed him.”
Hebrews 11:24-25 “By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.”
As we can see, his mother made good use of the short time she had with him.
4. Moses Adopted
Exodus 2:10 “And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. So she called his name Moses, saying, “Because I drew him out of the water.”
His stay in the Egyptian court lasted just shy of forty years. During this period he was educated in the Egyptian culture:
Acts 7:22 “And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds.”
