“THE TEN COMMANDMENTS”

“GOD IS A JEALOUS GOD”

EXODUS 20:4-6

Exodus 20:4-6

We need the worship God correctly and that means we shall not make for ourselves any idols. God is a jealous God.

Exodus 34:14 “(for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God).”

Deuteronomy 4:24 “For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.”

Deuteronomy 6:15 “(for the Lord your God is a jealous God among you), lest the anger of the Lord your God be aroused against you and destroy you from the face of the earth.”

Nahum 1:2 “God is jealous, and the Lord avenges; The Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies;”

vs.4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”

“Idolatry”- is a man made representation of God, that is of His nature, attributes. An idol is an attempt to have something visual to help me to see the invisible other than what God has ordained.

“God is the I Am that I Am”-that means He is not who you try to make Him to be, we must worship Him correctly.

God’s ways are not our ways:

Isaiah 55:9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.”

Romans 1:20-23

The first idol out there is a man, “image made like corruptible man…” vs.23

Colossians 3:5 “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” The god of sex.

Psalm 115:4-8

Psalm 135:15-18

You become like what you worship.

Philippians 3:19 “Whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.”

Why is God so sensitive?

vs.5 “You shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God…”

When you put other idols before Him, you do three things:

  1. You Limit God
  2. It Localizes God
  3. It Leverages God

Idols of the heart:

Ezekiel 14:4-8

Too often the problem is we want a god we can control, and the true God will never let that happen.

Israel broke this command pretty quick:

Exodus 32:1-6

Exodus 32:9-10

The moment you craft an image, you are no longer living by faith but by sight. Unauthorized image cancel faith.

John 11:40 “Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”

What is the cost of idolatry?

Exodus 20:5-6 “visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”

This has generational implication.

So are you making decision with your family in mind?

God has only response to idols, destroy them.

Exodus 32:20 “Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it.”
