“THE TEN COMMANDMENTS”

“RESPECTING YOUR PARENTS”

EXODUS 20:12

Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”

So the first thing God goes to is the family- “honor your father and mother…” Now this study applies to everyone in the room tonight because everyone is somebody’s child.

The world today is trying to redefine the family.

This commandment is designed to establish the family as the foundation. God says honor your parents so you can preserve the land, so God will be blessed in the nations.

Why does Satan hate your family?

Parents are to be children’s escorts through life.

"Honor your father and your mother” Why?

Because parents represent God’s chain of command. God has an order or a design and God works through His order.

Children how you respond to God chain of command is how God will respond to you.

How serious is this command to honor your father and mother?

Deuteronomy 21:18-21

2 Kings 2:23-24

My point is this, this is not a casual commandment, it is serious. This had to do with life and death, because it had to do with the preservation of the nation.

“Honor”- means to give weight or importance too. Don’t treat them lightly.

Ezekiel 22:7 “In you they have made light of father and mother; in your midst they have oppressed the stranger; in you they have mistreated the fatherless and the widow.”

The reason children should be obeying and honoring their parents is because you should want God on your side.

Even as adult children we are to still honor our parents. So what does that mean?

*You are to honor your father and mother verbally.

Proverbs 30:11 “There is a generation that curses its father,
And does not bless its mother.”

1 Timothy 5:1-2 “Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, 2older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.”

*You are to honor father and mother financially.

1 Timothy 5:4 “But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good and acceptable before God.”

1 Timothy 5:16 “If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows.”

Matthew 15:4-6

Jesus says you are to honor your parents.

*You are to honor father and mother relationally.

John 19:26-27

Some of our parents need a covering. That is honor.

*You are to honor father and mother emotionally.

Proverbs 10:1 “The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son makes a glad father, But a foolish son is the grief of his mother.”

Make them happy, make them smile, make them glad.

Why do this? Why honor your father and mother?

Ephesians 6:1-2

God puts a motivational element to this commandment. God will do two things for you:

*God will increase your quality of life- “that it may be well with you…”

Proverbs 4:10-13

Exodus 21:17 “And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.”

*God will give you a longer quantity of life- “…you may live long on the earth.”

*Parents make it easy not hard for your children to obey and honor you.

Rules without relationships lead to rebellion.

*Teenagers at home begin affirming your parents strengths and obeying their guideline they have giving you.

Please God by obeying them.
