“THE TEN COMMANDMENTS”

“THE PURPOSE OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS”

EXODUS 20:1-17

Boundaries are there to maximize the game, remove the boundaries you introduce chaos into the field of play, establish the boundaries and the game can be maximized and thoroughly enjoyed.

In the giving of the Ten Commandments God established boundaries.

Why Did God Give The Ten Commandments?

*  The Preamble:

Exodus 20:1-2 “And God spoke all these words, saying: 2“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.”

God identifies Himself, “I am the Lord your God…”

Three Purposes For God Giving The Ten Commandments:

  1.   The Revealing Purpose- God revealing His minimum standard so people will respond to Him.

It is the minimum standard- Jesus said in the sermon on the Mount:

Matthew 5:21-30

Galatians 5:16-18

The ten commandments are designed to show if we are on the level.

2.   The Restraining Purpose

Galatians 3:19 “What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.”

Why the Law then? The reason God added the ten commandments was because of transgression or sin.

“It was added because of transgressions.” vs.19

Exodus 15:23-24 “Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah. 24And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”

Exodus 16:2 “Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.”

The tenth commandment is not to covet- it has to do with being content.

The Law was added to protect the people from themselves.

1 Timothy 1:9-11

Because society is evil, Law has to be instituted to retrain them from what they would do otherwise. Boundaries, guidelines.

3.   The Redemptive Purpose of the Ten Commandments

Romans 3:20 “Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”

The ten commandments can’t make you righteous, all they can do is reveal when you are unrighteous.

Galatians 3:8-12

Galatians 3:23-24 “But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. 24Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”

The law stirs up sin, but it cannot fix sin.

The Law is designed to show you are in a need for a Savior, you can’t get to God on your own.

2 Corinthians 5:21 “God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”

2 Corinthians 5:15 “And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died for them and was raised again.”

No longer living for ourselves, but living for Christ.
