“ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH YOUR LIFE?”
“CHANGING YOUR CLOTHES”
COLOSSIANS 3:8-11
You need a change of clothes not a cover up.
Three Things:
1. What In Fact, Has Happened To You If You Are A Believer In Jesus Christ.
Colossians 3:9-10 “Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.”
vs.9 “have put off”
vs.10 “have put on”
These are verbs that are past tense. It has already happened.
vs.9 “have put off the old man with his deeds.” The old nature
Colossians 2:11 “In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ.”
vs.10 “and have put on the new man…” We have inherited a new nature from Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
1 Corinthians 15:45 “And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”
Colossians 2:12 “Buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.”
A spiritual operation that God performs on you at salvation.
Galatians 3:27 “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
We have put on Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:13 “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.”
The issue is how are you going to dress the new man?
2. What Should Happen To You On The Basis Of What Has Happened?
Colossians 3:8-9 “But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds.”
Colossians 3:12 “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;”
These are commandments, not instructions- put off, put on.
Six things to “put off”, get rid of them. These are sins of the mouth or tongue. They begin with an attitude, anger, and end with an action lying. Colossians 3:8-9
Define The Problem:
“Put off all these”:
* “Anger”- this is sinful anger
Ephesians 4:26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath.”
Righteous anger is used to solve problems, not create them.
* “Wrath”-outward manifestations of anger that comes from the heart. “Put it off”
James 1:20 “for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”
* “Malice”- badness or worthlessness, wickedness, evil, naughtiness. “Put it off”
* “Blasphemy”- slander, claiming to be something you are not. “Put it off”
Mark 7:21-23 “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. 23All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”
* “Filthy language”- tearing people down. “Put it off”
Ephesians 4:29 “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”
* “Do not lie to one another”- lying involves the intent to deceive for the purpose of personal gain. “Put it off”
Ephesians 4:25 “Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.”
So you are here today and you struggle with these things, what do you do?
3. How To Make It All Possible
More effort on your part is not the answer.
Galatians 3:3 “Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?
You don’t achieve spiritual victory by trying harder, you achieve it by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 6:10 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.”
Colossians 3:10 “and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.”
Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
Ephesians 4:22-24 “that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
2 Corinthians 4:16 “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.
Colossians 3:10 “renewed in knowledge”- How is it renewed?
2 Peter 3:18 “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Colossians 3:10 “… according to the image of Him who created him.”
That we might be like Christ:
Romans 8:29 “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.”
1 Corinthians 15:49 “And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.”
2 Corinthians 3:18 “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
God’s desire for your life, God’s will for your life is that you would be like Jesus. After His image.
Colossians 3:11 “where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.”
This passes over all barriers.
“Christ is all and in all”
Will you lay yourself on the altar? So He can renew you.
