“ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH YOUR LIFE?”
“WHAT DIRECTION ARE YOU GOING?”
COLOSSIANS 3:2-3
Colossians 3:1-3 “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
Colossians 3:2 “Set your mind on things above…”
You need to realize your emotions are a loaded gun and you need to be careful where you aim them.
vs.2 “mind”- set your mind, your affections, your emotions.
Philippians 2:5 “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 12:16 “Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.”
Affections is more than emotions, it involves the mind and really all of you.
Paul is saying that you better mind things that are above, set your affections and your attention on them and obey them.
Romans 8:5 “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”
You must learn to set your affections. Are you going to set them on earthly things or on heavenly things?
Your affections must have a direction.
If you set your affections wrongly it can destroy you:
Romans 1:26-32
Now think of your emotions as a thermostat. You must set your emotions or someone else will.
Your emotions can be used wrongly to manipulate but they can be used rightly to motivate.
“Set your mind on things above…”
Where have you set your emotional thermostat? Above or below
Romans 7:5 “For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.”
“passions”= affections
2 Corinthians 1:5-7
“sufferings”=affections
2 Corinthians 7:13-15
“set your mind on things above…”
Philippians 1:8 “For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.”
“Affection”-bowels, the seat of our emotional state.
Philippians 4:8-9 “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”
Galatians 5:24 “And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
Your affections are to be brought to the cross of Christ, so your mind can be set on things above.
Colossians 3:1-2 “seek” “set” on things of God, things that are above.
Matthew 16:22-23 “Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!” But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”
“Mindful”- Peter lost perspective and he set his affections on the things of the earth.
Colossians 3:2 “not on things on the earth.”
Don’t point your emotions in the wrong direction.
Philippians 3:19 “Whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.”
Colossians 3:3 “For you died…” We should be dead to this world and alive to the heavenly, the things above.
Colossians 3:3 “and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
This means when people look at you they don’t see you they see Christ in you.
Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
“Seek those things which are above” vs.1
“Set your mind on things above” vs.2
Why? Because you are dead and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Where is your thermostat set? Things above? Or things on the earth?
