“DOING THE RIGHT THING”

“GUILTY”

ROMANS 3:9-20

Psalm 14:1-3

Paul quotes from this psalm, in this passage “The fool has said in his heart, No God!”

So Paul starts this section on all are guilty by asking a question:

*Who Is Better?

Romans 3:9 “What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.”

So which is it? Did the Jews have an advantage over the Gentiles?

Genesis 12:3 “I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Paul shows us we are sinners, it is very evident. We are all under sin. We are sinner by actions, by nature, by imputation, and by family connection.

  1.   Charge Number One

Romans 3:10 “As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one.”

What does it mean to be righteous?

Psalm 53:1-3

Ecclesiastes 7:20 “For there is not a just man on earth who does good And does not sin.”

God makes the rules, take it or leave it.

2.   Charge Number Two

Romans 3:11 “There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God.”

“Understands” means to bring together.

3.   Charge Number Three

Romans 3:11 “…There is none who seeks after God.”

Acts 17:30 “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent.”

4.   Charge Number Four

Romans 3:12 “They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”

1 Peter 3:11 “Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it.”

5.   Charge Number Five

Romans 3:12 “…They have together become unprofitable…”

“Unprofitable”-suggests overripe, spoiled fruit, to become sour.

6.   Charge Number Six

Romans 3:12 “…There is none who does good, no, not one.”

Matthew 15:14 “Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”

The Great Physician says we are spiritually sick:

*Open Your Mouth

Romans 3:13 “Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “The poison of asps is under their lips”

“Their throat is an open tomb” vs.13

*Stick Out Your Tongue

vs.13- “With their tongues they have practiced deceit” When God looks at our tongues, do you know what He says?

“The poison of asps is under their lips”

Psalm 5:9 “For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; Their inward part is destruction; Their throat is an open tomb; They flatter with their tongue.”

Psalm 140:3 “They sharpen their tongues like a serpent; The poison of asps is under their lips. Selah”

*Mouth Full Of Cursing

Romans 3:14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”

Psalm 10:3-7

*Feet Swift To Shed Blood

Romans 3:15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood.”

Isaiah 59:7 “Their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed innocent blood; Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; Wasting and destruction are in their paths.”

Proverbs 1:16 “For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood.”

*Destruction And Misery In There Way

Romans 3:16 “Destruction and misery are in their ways.”

Isaiah 59:7 “…Wasting and destruction are in their paths.”

*No Peace

Romans 3:17 “And the way of peace they have not known.”

*No Fear Of God

Romans 3:18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”

Psalm 36:1 “An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked: There is no fear of God before his eyes.”

*The Law

Romans 3:19-20 “Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”

Acts 13:39 “And by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.”

Galatians 2:16 “knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.”

God gave the Law because He knew that the bad news of our sinful condition leads to the good news of the Gospel. So thank God for His Law, for His relentless, loving confrontation of our sin!
